Evap System!?!?!?!?

So the check engine light went on my 2000 Toyota Echo and I went to my mechanic to get the diagnosis of why it was going on and it was the evap system.

He said he didnt have the necessary tools to fix and that I had to take it to the dealership to get it fixed.

he said if I didnt it wouldnt pass the smog test, so I was wondering if any has had this problem before and how much it costs to fix it.

Thanks!!!!

I just had a problem with my check engine light. I had the Mass air sensor, O2 sensor, gas cap and finally the evap canister changed. The first two were done under a 30 day warranty when I bought the car, but the last two were on my dime. I just got the car back yesterday, so I will see if the light comes back on. I also had a friend that owned a code reader, so he could read them, let me know what was wrong and clear the codes for me. P0440 was the most prominent, which was the evap system. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and get it looked at by the pro's. From my research, there are only a few things that cause evap codes. The gas cap, the lines and the canister with the canister being the most expensive. Good luck

P0440 is an evap. vent control malfunction I believe...it's common with toyota's to have the tank by-pass vsv become faulty (underneath the car beside the charcoal canister)

I can't even begin to tell you how many I've changed on 98-2001 corolla's
But it is a car so it still could be something else....but I'll bet that's what it is
