I have a manual hatchback, 90% highway driving and under 1000 ft elevation, started getting about 34 it has slowly gotten a little better so it is now at 36.
Manual transmision, multiple 58 mile trips starting with cold engine (my commute each way) Hot weather with AC on - 38MPG; warm weather with AC off - 46 to 47MPG; cool weather with heat on 43 to 44 MPG; warm weather, driving extremely conservatively & coasting in neutral down hills, etc, 52-53MPG. Each of these numbers is computed after at least 2 tanks full of fuel.
my girl friend has a automatic and she drives it in 3rd to break it in.
it only has 2000 miles or less and she is getting like 27mpg.
i'm guessing this is cause it is in 3rd gear.
i wish she would have bought a stick but she doesn't know how to drive stick.

After 15,000 miles, the best I've been able to achieve is 38mpg combine city/hwy. Is your route all hwy and how fast are you going?

but you guys are getting better mpg than her.
tell her to take it out of 3rd she is going to kill her trany
^^^Going a long with that it decreases the life of the tranny and engine wear cause its not at "optimal" operation...unless she wants to shell out 2K if not more for a tranny?

One way commute is 2 miles city, 42 miles highway, 14 miles secondary roads. Start point is sea level, over slightly hilly terrain, to an elevation of about 300 feet. Add approximately a mile city driving per weekday, and 15 city miles per weekend. Highway average is probably just about 60mph (I usually cruise at 65, traffic permitting), secondary roads, 40 mph. Fuel consumption over 6825 miles was 152 US gallons, which is 44.9 MPG.
Wish I could get those kind of mileage, it'd save my $70/month. But then, my driving is about 50% city and I'm hard on the gas, so there's probably no hope for me to get anything better them my average, which is 35mpg.
Seems like it's possible to really capitalize on the hills if you're able cost down in neutral, cause the car doesn't really need much to get up those hills (unless you're in a hurry).

According to Toyota's USA website, the fuel economy under ideal conditions is: Manual (city/hwy) 34/40
Auto (city/hwy) 34/39
Usually, under real life conditons, fuel economy is a little to alot worse than the numbers posted by manufacturers depending on various factors (your driving style, extra weight in the car, etc).
How have you been able to achieve 10% BETTER than IDEAL fuel economy?
Have you removed all the seats? stripped the car's interior? stripped the paint off? removed the spare tire? are you using higher octane fuel? Maybe you forgot to include the full tank you had when you received the car plus a fill-up or two during your 6825 miles???
