spare tire mounting?

This is my first actual car, so i dont know much, and i am sortof really regretting getting a 2 door instead of 4 door (well, 3 door instead of five since i have the 07 hatch). I thought it might help to relieve my tensions and regrets if i dumped that spare tire, padded the tire well and could use it to help with a months worth of groceries or a camping trip. However, on a long road trip i would hate to dump my spare tire, anybody know if there is anyway to mount the spare tire under the car or preferebly on the back? i talked to the toyota specialist and he just said they didnt have anything availble...are such things available aftermarket? what kind of affect would it have on my car?

Why would you not just get something simple like a roof rack to put some of the stuff on? Far cheaper than trying to get a custom mount for a spare, and whose kidding who, that thing takes up so little space you can't possibly really gain anything by moving it.

No it won't fit under the car like trucks have...they have a lot more ground clearance

roof rack

well i was under the impression that if i mounted my spare tire on the roof with a roof rack it would probably look pretty bad, but worst it would cost me major mpg wouldnt it? as the yaris works so well because of its aerodynamic designs, at least thats me and my car exposure of 3 weeks understanding...how much would it cost to get something mounted on the back? i dont know about anythign, but the tire well looked like it could hold a fair amount of stuff, especially considering the already tiny size of the cargo area with seats up

You could go to the trouble to mount a trailer hitch, and build a rack much like for bikes to mount the tire on, but while attached you would not be able to open the hatch door, meaning you would have to take it on and off all the time. Attached to the door, I doubt the gas struts would be able to hold up the extra weight so the door would not stay up on it's own anymore, and you would have to drill the body and mount something to the door permanently.

Go for it if you want, but I fail to see the advantage.

yea i suppose so

well i suppose yoru right, i guess i will just have to dump out the tire and trust triple A if i have a problem...i wonder if i would actually jack up my car and fix the tire anyway...especially without a full size spare

Why would you want to take the spare out? Like bgrieger, you're not going to gain that much usable space anyways....

y would u want to put the tire on the roof when u have a roof rack????

y dont u keep the tires in the actual place with some dirty laudry/shoes since it covers up....the use the roof rack for your rest of the stuff.

mounting the tires on the back is not possible since it will just close back on you. too heavy for the support struts. word of advice on long hauls....never leave a spare behind.
