If it just started to ping, could be the gas. Try another brand or grade of gas. Stay away from hills (or downshift) or putting a load on the engine as pinging is not good for the engine. Does this car have a knock sensor, the sensor should detect the ping and attempt to retard the timing to stop it. Check engine light on?
