Yaris changing my mind

Well Hi all, I thought I had it all figured out. My husband and I were going to purchase a diesel bug this spring wanting to have a fuel efficient fun car to drive in the warm months and now crap I see these cute little cars called a Yaris while I'm driving my niece around looking for a vehicle for her. I'm slowly falling in love with the hatchback and I just want to squeeze it, it is the cutest little car I've ever seen, the front end just makes me smile. Now I know about the reliability with Toyotas my question is has anyone taken their Yaris on a road trip? How does she fare on long travels? And anyone would care to compare the two -Yaris and Beetle please do I'm always curious as to what people have to say.

Thanks for the links. I'm definetely leaning towards the Yaris. Now I just have to convince my husband. I guess all I have to do is show him carsurvey.org and have him read all of the horrible reviews on the beetle. Looks like mpg numbers on the Yaris are pretty close to the diesel. Next I will go to the Toyota dealership and test drive one, I can't wait! FUN, FUN, FUN!!!

Hi,

I happen to have a VW golf and a Yaris Hatchback.
When we were looking for a second car the main thing was fuel as I have a fairly long commute.
My wife pointed me to the Yaris as I was looking for a diesel Golf, but they are hard to find as once people have them they keep them.
I asked my wife, if you want you can have the Yaris and I'll take the Golf but she said nope, she loves the Golf.
Anyway, both cars are great. VW knows how to make a great to drive fun car and comes with a lot of feature you can't get on cars in the same prices range or higher. As for the diesel well, what can you say, VW make the best one on the market that's none commercial. Many others have tried to make and keep them here in North America but VW is the only one that is growing that market and knows what they are doing.
My Yaris is a great little car, great to park costs me about 33 bucks CDN to fill it from empty and I can get about 600Km on that tank which is what I need for my week. The car sits over the weekend as the baby seat is in the VW so we use that on the weekends.
The Yaris has great room inside and is also fun to drive but doesn't hold a candle to the VW. I always feel that I am in the VW is just has that great to drive, sporty, " you can't touch this" feeling.
I wouldn't trade my Yaris for any other car for what I use it for. I wouldn't sell it or trade as it's a great little car that is very cheap to run.
With Diesel you need to run Synthetic oil which will cost about 90 bucks per change vs my Yaris which is about 35. These prices are both dealer prices and CDN, but you get the point.
Between your two choices though the beetle has an issue in the back with headroom for bigger folks, where the Yaris doesn't. The Yaris has no trunk to speak of short of a say 2 packs of the 32 rolls of toilet paper or 2 cases of beer, then your done. The Beetle is a bit better there.
Tough choice, both cars are nice but the beetle will come with more goodies, and Yaris will have more room for people in the back.
Make sure you drive both cars and stuff your friends in the back, put your normal load of shopping in it etc, then it will come to you.
Enjoy.. and Good Luck

Thanks so much for the replies. I drove last night to show my husband the Yaris and it seems to be a no go. He doesn't like the proportions of the car. Oh well it looks like it will be between a diesel bug or golf. Take care everyone and enjoy your Yaris's.

Here in Canada, the 06 Golf TDI cost about $7000 more then a similar equipped Yaris (with Power Package). So, there's no comparison. Also, the Yaris is faster and has better handling.

Unfortunately, the 07 Golf doesn't come with a diesel engine. However, I believe they will be dropping the 2.0L diesel engine into that car in the near future. But once again, there will be an even bigger difference in pricing when compared to the Yaris.

I can congratulate anyone choosing either the VW or the Yaris. I always hope to have a diesel VW, the bug or the Golf, because of their legendary fuel economy. However, the Yaris which I now have fulfills my needs nicely and still gives me more than respectable fuel economy. There is an added bonus of Toyota reliability too.

well all i can say is that for a cheap fuel efficient car, yaris is good value for your money. I've drove on long haul trips with a short toilet break around 3 hours interval and for total time at around 9 hours straight. no probs at all. only thing i hate is that i cannot guage the temperatureof the engine....fear of overheating. and also the car is sensitive to the wind on the highway. i'll just wait till my current tires wear out before i change it to a bigger rim size and maybe a performance struts.....will improve long haul handling.

space is just about right for 2 person with baggages and our shopping load for the return trip.

He would have to look at used xB as it is discontinued after the 2006 model year...or wait until the replacement that debuts I believe at the Chicago show in February and see what it looks like. I know it will be bigger.

TMarie,

Consider the recent reliability of the VW lines. My 1987 Jetta GLI-16V was a fantastic machine, especially easy to fix yourself. The 1997 Jetta GLX was not as reliable but not bad at all. Not all that many shop days. Anecdotal evidence for more recent Jettas appears to be not as good in reliability as the 1997 Jetta.

On the other hand the Jettas are pure fun to drive!

Yaris is GREAT!!

To be really honest I bought mine in early 06 and I have abour 16,000 miles on it and I love it. It is fun, and easy to drive as a daily commuter and on long trip the car is fine. We were climbing mountains in mie doing 70+mph with ease, so I have no idea why anyone would say that it has no guts for anything other than the city driving. The only complaint I have is the seats need a little more support/padding, they are a bit hard.

As for the VW it is a great car too, if you don't mind the higher price of purchase, and the higher cost of deisel since that is what you are looking at. Mechanical they are a great car! My mom has one and she loves the thing. Look at Kbb.com and you can compare the two side by side. Good luck, they are both great choices.
