Oil consumption

Just bought an '05 Echo and was reading the Owner's Manual... it says (Page 150 if you have one) that normal oil consumption can be 1.1 quarts/600 miles! Somehow this doesn't sound right! I have never had a car that used that much oil - and I have owned some oldies!

Why would Toyota put something like that in the manual? Does the Corolla (Yaris, whatever) manual say anything similar?

My guess is none of you have had oil consumption like that!

On most manufacturers cars 1 quart per 1K miles is considered OK, although yes this is burning a lot of oil. 1 quart or less per 3K miles is more normal for a higher mileage well kept car. But this cars engine may be different. Some Toyota engines do burn more oil. Toyota may be covering their ass-ets in case the engine becomes an oil burner and can state this is within normal range.

I better look at my manual then. I wonder if they do this so you would go in for more oil changes?? Conspiracy? hum? I don't know but I just go for the regular 5k intervals.

Check your oil!

I certainly plan on going in for the 5k change but will be checking the oil regularly just in case!

Having read a thread on excess oil consumption in a 2-yr-old Corolla (the owner was told this was 'normal'), I bet this is "cover your ass-ets!"

I have a 1 quart oil consumption every 3000 km. Is that normal in a 105 000 km car?
