Canada Rough idle

My wife's 2003 echo sedan, with 200 000kms on it, ir runnning rought when sitting at a stop light while in gear, if she puts in neutral, runs smooth, but in Drive, runs rough. My old tercel did this as well. Wondering what i should check or so in this situation? I have no idea what her maitenance schedule is like, maybe she is overdue for something. I have to buy a rear driver side wheel bearing today and would pick up anything else while I'm there.

someone told me it's timing? but i though these cars used a timing chain? thanks in advance.

I have an 03 sedan as well. And my car does the same, but it varies somedays, sometimes the idle is rough others not too bad when in drive, but like your wife when I put it in neutral (Auto) it "smooths" out. If it gets any worse then check it out. I guess I never really considered it to be an issue. It seems worst for me when the car is cold and when its cold or colder out...but when the car warms up its better. You should have a schedual maintiance in your handbook or call the dealer and ask, its important to do this or you will be paying more $$$$ in the long run. Usually the dealer to get your business obviously will send you reminders of when your next service is. Good luck!

I'll probably end up taking it to the dealer or somewhere, cause my tercel did as well, and had engine problems after awhile, don't want the samething to happen to hers.

I notice when I put supreme gas in it the other day, it did not do this? makes me think it is a timing issue.... but they have chains, not timing belts?
