I was driving my 2001 auto transmission Echo last night from work. The car operated fine for 15-16 miles on the interstate. After slowing down to merge with traffic on a different interstate, the blue cool engine light came on and the car wouldn't go to "top gear". I dropped speed and drove for about 1.5 to 2 miles. Then the light went off and it would go up in gear. Any ideas? The check engine light was on from a previous carbon build-up issue, so I don't know if my issue today would have triggered that light to come on.
^^^All I know is when the car is cold (for auto) the engine won't upshift to the overdrive gears (4th) because it was designed that way, emissions reasons, so the car will warm up faster. I haven't heard the blue light coming on after the car is warmed up...that's the only thing I can think of. Otherwise I would get it checked out sooner than later as you probably don't want to be stranded. How many miles do you have on it?

I also have a problem with the cool engine light, but mine won't go ON anymore. I dont know if it's burned or if there's a problem with some sensor... Any ideas??

If it's an automatic car, does it shift from 1-2-3 and stop? If it stops at 3, it could be a burned out light. If it shifts into 4 even when you know the engine is cold, it could be the ECT. The ECT should be by the lower radiator hose on the radiator.
My problem isn't the same as jmm3636's. The car has a manual transmission, and the problem begun earlier this winter. Usualy, when I turn on the car, the blue light (engine cool) would stay lit for some time, until the engine warmed. But, some time ago, the light didn't came ON anymore, just like that. There isn't any other problem the car works just fine, but I still wonder: is it the LED, or some wire, or the sensor... ??? Should I wait until my oil change in june to check this out or should I go right now?
