MAF sensor question on 2000 Echo

Hi,

I've been reading about Toyota Echo and MAF sensor problems. My check engine light came on today and I looked for the MAF sensor.

I believe they're at the bottom of the unit - at the bottom of some sort of well?

If this is so, they're so black I can't even see them. How would I clean them to make sure this is what's causing the light to come on?

Also, if this is the problem, will the light go off once cleaned or is there something more I must do? I don't want to damage the unit in the process...

I appreciate any advice anyone can give me, thanks,

DS

Before getting into the engine go to AutoZone and have the trouble codes read for free.

^^^Its an auto parts store...you might not have one in your area. But I'm sure there are ones in your area that are equivelant or just as good.

update

I had the O2 sensor changed three weeks ago. All good, until yesterday when light went back on. Last time there were two error messages, now there's one. It's one of the same ones as last time. Something with the air or something. MAF needs to be checked and they want to check gas filter, etc. What's going on?

Don't remember. What would one typically see for a MAF problem?

So finally we ended up changing the MAF as well as the O2 Sensor. Came to $640 total. MAF was rusted. O2 sensor had an error message. Car's running much better now for sure. Huge difference.
