Well I was just finishing up the paperwork on my new yaris when the dealer hit me with...so are you going to want the immobilizer security. It hadn't even occurred to me.
They're saying 499 CDN installed for one with fobs and 599 for one with all these other features and a couple of remotes. Seems like overkill.
I left saying I'd make my mind up later. Today the dealer called up and told me some story about a client who had just called saying his sons was stolen and he should have listened to her about the security system.
So maybe I do need a security system even though that story is totally suspect. The dealer prices seem way to high for something like this. Would it be better to get this from some car security shop? Does that seem way high for a simple immobilizer with a red LED?
Insurance will save me a whole 40 bucks a year or so. Not that big of a deal. Any advice? I hate when they add stuff on at the last second.
The dealer brings up these things at the last minute because this puts you on the spot. You want the car, don’t want it stolen of course, they make a lot of profit on these items and they are now pressing you. Much like trying to add on an extended warranty, under coating, insurance in case you can not make the payments, etc, etc. Think dealer profit.
Is this an add-on item or integrated into the cars ECU as on models like Avalon?
Suggest getting the details of this unit and call a few shops that do this type of work for a price quote. Many people install these systems themselves, some folks install something like a fuel pump cut off switch and/or some type of alarm system decal.
Do a web search on most stolen cars to see where your car ranks.
If aftermarket, might look into buying and installing a system yourself. Check TN to see if there is a larger audience forum you can post a question to such as how differant alarm system rank with members. TN members install these devices frequently.
Check Ebay to see if these things are listed and do a Google search. Get an idea of what the street price is (keep in mind labor costs are included in the dealer price).
People are stealing Yaris? What is this world coming to. You can look into aftermarket alarm systems (can also get ones with remote start and all the other code goodies). IMO the immobolizers aren't really helpful without the alarm system.
I don't know if people are really stealing a Yaris, but the dealer made me paranoid. I'm going to install a 199 dollar barracuda immobilizer instead of the 499 audiovox version the dealership wanted to sell.
I think it's a good idea. It's a reputable company.
The only thing I really miss is a mini-stereo in so I can hook up my ipod.

Love the car so far.
Then the sales people and their tactics are working if they are able to scare you. Unless your going to highly mod your car I don't see a reason for the Yaris to be on the top 10 most stolen car (although mine made it). As for the iPod hookup, that can be changed. You can hook it up to your stock stereo system.
And by immobilizer you mean the alarm system, different terms.
The official word on immobilizers from Toyota Canada
Through e-mails with Toyota Canada, the official word on immobilizers is:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
"Please be advised that the 2007 Yaris Sedan does not have an engine immobilizer and one cannot be installed as an option."
---------------------------------------------------------------------
(I assume the proscription applies to Yaris Liftbacks and Yarii 2006 in Canada as well ... which is pretty sad when you consider that the American Yaris DOES offer an immobilizer as part of an options package).
So if ANY Toyota dealership is attempting to sell you an immobilizer with a new Yaris, they're selling you up the river. Save that $499 and put your money towards a steering wheel lock and tire wheel lock nuts instead.

One can easily be bypassed by sawing through the soft steering wheel and the other, well...doesn't help in theft prevention unless your talking about people taking the wheels.
I think the OT means the alarm system, he/she wasn't really clear with the terms.
I checked out a few places in Vancouver. An alarm system with immobilizer should be around $350 plus tax. Every seller seems to have its own system. The cheapest I found was at Vision, approx $270
I called also a Toyota dealer. Their quote $400...but I am not sure what exactly do they installe. The guy on the phone didn't even know that Yaris in Canada doesn't come with immobilizer as an option.
Just to clarify, the dealership was talking passive immobilizer or passive immobilizer with alarm and auto door locks etc.
it was a 3rd party system as Toyota doesn't offer one in Canada. And they don't offer side airbags or a stereo with an aux in for an mp3 player, but that's another story.
I ended up going to speaker city where they installed an immobilizer with key fob for 199 all in. For another 60 bucks they would have installed the auto door locks on key fob and for another 40 on top of that they would have hooked up an alarm.
As it was, immobilizer with the all important flashing LED was 199. Much cheaper than the dealer
I just talked today with the guy at Speaker City, near Granville Island. He seemed to be knowledgable. Told me that he installed already an immobilizer on Yaris (may have been your car?) I was told thar 350 will give me immobilizer, alarm and combined access to keyless door/ alarm. Since he is also located close to where I work...I am thinking just to give him a try tomorrow. Thanks for suggesting this place
That was probably me they were talking about. They were really professional and did a great job. They seem to take their jobs seriously which is a good sign. The last thing you want is someone who doesn't know what they are doing.
