Transmission whine?

I recently bought a 2007 Yaris 4-door with automatic transmission. I notice that there is a noise from the transmission whenever I slow down for a stop sign or traffic light. The noise is more noticeable from the driver's side than from the passenger's side. The noise is not easy to describe. It isn't exactly a"whine" but that's the best description I can come up with.

Also, I am not mechanically adept. Therefore I am merely assuming that this noise eminates from the transmission.

I now have nearly 1000 miles on the car, but I noticed the noise practically from the first day.

I checked transmission fluid. It's right at the correct line, & that's all I know to check out. I will take it to dealer service next week.

Is this a "typical/normal" noise for a new Yaris with automatic transmission? Or is this noise signalling me that trouble lies ahead? Or... what?

Any advice or comments will be very much appreciated.

aloha from Hawaii... bellgamin

Is it more of a sqeeking, squeeling or whining noise? Got any sound clips of what your referring to? I'm thinking its the brakes but I want to be sure.

Thanks for answering, Tangerine.

It's more like a whine I think.

It happens when I am gradually losing speed by taking my foot off the accelerator -- such as when I come upon slow-moving traffic, or I am slowing down for a red light that is about to turn green.

It happens whether I am using the brakes or not -- that's why I suspect the tranny.

You have a warranty, take it to the dealer and let them take care of it. Don't mess around trying to get a diagnosis over the internet when we can't even hear the noise.

Good advice. I am headed there today. I was merely hoping that this was something "common" to Yaris vehicles, and was not anything that needed "fixing" at all. This was the case with my Willys automobile (way back when) -- it hummed to itself at speeds between 30-40 MPH. Did so for over 10 years of driving, until I reluctantly traded it in with 237,000 miles on it.

Dealer foot-dragging

On 5/9 I took my car to the dealer. The service people heard the whine. For comparison, they drove two other new Yaris cars and said that those cars did NOT make the same whine.

Therefore they told me to leave the car because of a problem in the transaxle &/or transmission. They gave me a loaner to drive in the meantime.

As of today (5/11) the management & warranty gurus are "having meetings" about what to do about my problem. My service consultant said he has heard that those folks are now thinking about saying the whine is "typical" and "not a problem."

I cannot prove that the mechanics & service consultant said they did NOT hear any such whine from other Yaris cars, and I don't know if they will stick with their earlier statements or *forget* that they ever said them.

So I elaborate a bit upon my earlier question...Is there anyone here who drives a 2007 Yaris with automatic shift? If so, do you hear any sort of "whine," at around 30mph, when your car is coasting to a stop? I would VERY much appreciate your answer, whether yes or whether no.

Unhappy

Status Report- It's been OVER 2 weeks and the Toyota dealer still has my new Yaris & still has not yet fixed it.

They are starting to talk in circles a bit. Namely, on 5/14/07 the service consultant told me he had ordered parts on that day - 5/14/07. Yesterday (5/23/07) I spoke to the service concierge & she said that her computer showed the parts were ordered on 5/23/07.

Afterward, when I again spoke to the service consultant about the part-ordering discrepency he said (in effect) "Oh yes -- that's because they were having meetings about your car." I asked him when the parts would arrive. He said 5 days or more.

I have a brand new car that I drove for only 3 weeks that has now been in the repair shop going on 3 weeks. In the meantime it is sitting there, day after day in the hot sun near a construction site. I asked them to at least put it under cover but they said there is "no room."

I have elevated the matter to the dealer's General Manager who said, "I will look into it."

That sucks man. I have a rental 07 with an automatic while the fate of my echo is decided. I'll try doing it and see what happens. Of course, if the tranny grenades on this one, they just give me another and I'm on my way...

We've been having the same problem, we bought our yaris in june of 07 (new) since new it's had a steady " noise/ vibration more noticable from the driver's side. Although you can feel it in the floorboards. Took the car back 3 times they replaced the driveaxles, front hub and bearings, rototated and rebalanced all the tires. They then said the noise was a "characteristic of the vehicle." It doesn't get any worse, it drives me crazy however my wife drives this car and doesn't really bother her. Would like it fixed, have 26k on it and it will be out of warrantly sooner than later.
