Break lights and cluster question

I recently bought an 01 Echo 5 speed. The dashbard light does not work and neither does the back lights (and break lights). I can live without seeing the dashboard at nite, but I can get pulled over for not having rear lights. I took it to a mechanic yesterday and he said that the problem is in the cluster and if I replaced it, all the lights would work again. That doesn't sound right to me. Anyone an electric guru out there? I would really appreciate your advise.

Why does the mechanic state the cluster is is the problem. Did they mean the light switch?

Do any of the other running lights work, if so the problem may be is in the wiring? Have you checked the fuses, Stop, Gauge, Tail and light bulbs?

The Stoplight switch on the brake system (look at where the pedal connects to frame under the dash) controls on/off operation.

I'd get a second opinion on that one. Brake lights are usually unrelated to the cluster...

Ok, my mistake, the brake lights are working. So basically, all the lights (headlights, brake lights, blinkers) are working except for the tail lights and the dashboard light. Other than that dashboard seems to work fine (tempreture, airbag, etc.) Do you think that replacing the cluster CAN solve this problem? Again, my main concern is the tail lights. Anyone has a picture of how the fuses should be set up? Thank you.
