The other day I noticed that when the DRLs are on on my Yaris, the taillights are not. That freaked me out -- all those times that I was driving after sunset, thinking it was OK because the lights are always on anyway (though they are a bit brighter when you use the switch), I was driving without taillights. Ouch.
Is there a way to disable the DRLs altogether? I'd rather not get fooled into thinking my lights are on again. Full control is less misleading. Also, I don't like wasting energy (and lightbulbs). Heck, that's why I drive a Yaris in the first place.

Thanks & all the best,

The energy being "wasted" by DRLs is next to negligible. It is better to have such a safety feature than not.
Why not try to start a healthy habit of manually switching on your lights:
at the beginning of sunset
after a certain time (in Canada I think it's the law to turn the lights on after 6:30pm, regardless of how bright the sky still is)
at night (obviously)
in dark places (such as an indoor parking lot)
when it rains
when it's foggy
It's commendable that you realize there's a potential hazard when other drivers couldn't see your taillights in less ideal situations, but most importantly it's your duty to make sure others could see you. Trying to disable DRLs IMHO would not make the matter improve. Best thing to do is to condition yourself to flick the lights on by yourself based on some of the situations listed above. It's a good habit to have, trust me

@Ric N Sov's Solara: It is a 2007 hatchback; it's not an RS and it does not have fog lights (it's the most basic model I could get, manual transmission and no power windows or mirrors).

@EchoHoLiK: Thanks for the lecture but I am well aware it is my duty to make sure others can see me. But, the point I was trying to make is that it is misleading for a driver when they see the reflection of their headlights on the road ahead, and then assume that their lights are on -- while in fact the taillights are off. If my car is going to second-guess me, I'd rather they used the Volvo approach and simply have headlights *and* taillights on, and at full strength, all the time -- but I'd prefer simply being in full control myself.

I too wanted to know how to turn off my lights before I bought my yaris, i used to hate and think other people were stupid for having their lights on during the day, so heres my secret take a bat, a hammer might do but a good ole bat is best and bash your lights in.
Simple 5 minute job. There is no TSB out yet from Toyota, but it doesn't get any easier then this!
Tools Needed:
Medium size phillips screwdriver... thats it!
To gain enough room to access the DRL Relay, you need to first remove the steering column plastic cover.. Here's how!
Now, look under your steering wheel, you will see the height adjustment lever to tilt the steering wheel column, up and down.
Just to the right of the lever, you will see a Silver phillps head screw, remove it.
Now, with your hands on the steering wheel, at 9 o'clock, and 3 o'clock, turn the wheel 1/4 turn to the right. You will see a Black phillips head screw, remove it.
Now turn wheel back to center, and repeat for other side. Turn wheel 1/4 turn to the left. You will see a Black phillips head screw, remove it.
The steering column plastic can now be removed.. pull it down and towards you, it will snap out of place.
Now look back behind the dash, up and over towards the radio, and you will see a black box about the size of a pack of cigaretts with a brown lable, "TOYOTA RELAY ASSY RUNNING LIGHT 82810-52040."
Depress the white tab, and unhook the plug from the relay box.
Finally got some time to attempt the operation... I got the cover off the steering wheel column, and located the relay; it looked exactly like in Ric's pictures. I couldn't get it out, though; it's held in place with some plastic thingy to a white metal tab, and I couldn't see it well enough to figure out how to get it off. Tonight or tomorrow I'll try this again, this time with a pocket mirror and a digital camera at hand so that I can actually see what I'm doing...
Thanks so much. Was a very simple task,"you were right,THANKS" But once I did that, now the fogs will not come on. 2008 Yaris/5 speed. Does anyone know how to get the fogs to work with out installing the DTR lites ??????This form is great. I have found many fun facts about the Yaris. Thanks.
