Question anyone w/ trouble getting used to your yaris sedan standard shift vs prev car?

Hi
I love my new car I mean how can I not its a new car and all the nuances that go w/ a new car

That said weve had it about three weeks now and we are both finding it kinda...well work to drive.

I dont know if its the seat and positioning (steering wheel position?) involved thats diff' or the clutch picking up different then the old car (geo metro coupe standard shift)
or maybe its the sedan and not a little zippy coupe you can see out of better. I dont know...

I do know Ive driven manuals forever like...25 years and this is the first one Im just feeling not adjusted too. But this is our first four door car.

It feels like no matter how smoothly I try to shift it sounds like Im leaving clutch in too long or does yaris have an acceloration sound when shifting?

I think the car is fine, IM sure its us. I just wondered what others ideas are.

I am disoriented when backing up, the little car we used to have you could see everything, this feels like Im backing up blind.

I dont know...I just hope we get comfortable soon being uncomfy while driving worries me I will wreck it.

Maybe three and half weeks isnt enought adjustment time? We did have our old car ten years but like I said it was easy from day one.

Maybe the clutching and such is tight when theyre new?
I thought of having it reset to pick up lower to the floor but I hate to screw w/ a new car.

Thanks for input

It certainly "feels" unnatural at first, since the driver sits much higher in the Yaris, unlike older cars where the seats are lower to the floor. My advice is to try not to sit too far away from the steering wheel, but just far enough so that you're not right in front of the steering wheel (cuz of the airbag god forbid).

That's the drive-by-wire throttle (or e-throttle in a sense), so it'll have that rev-flair sensation between shifts. It's normal and it'll also feel unnatural if you came off from older cars with ol' school throttle-cable. Give it some more time to adjust, to kinda "learn" the engine's behavior. If you're really good at manual, you can also time the shift right to the point where, when you quickly up-shift to the next gear as soon as you depress the clutch, so as not to lose the revs when the next gear is already engaged. It's hard to describe with words, and each person has his/her own driving style to boot. You just need to find your own flow/pace

I think the car is fine, IM sure its us. I just wondered what others ideas are.

That's why I love my hatchback (Echo though, not Yaris, but close enough). Since you got the sedan with the really tall rear-end, you'll just have to live with it and get used to it. Although I'm sure you won't mind the capacity of the trunk though

I dont know...I just hope we get comfortable soon being uncomfy while driving worries me I will wreck it.
Are you physically uncomfortable due to the seating position(s), or just uncomfortable in general due to not being familiar yet with the car?

Maybe three and half weeks isnt enought adjustment time? We did have our old car ten years but like I said it was easy from day one.
That's right, I'd say even a month isn't quite enough. For me with my Echo, it took me at least 2 months to really get to know the car, and even so I still grind the gears sometimes (due to overzealous shifting LOL, which is also due to this car being so fun to drive ).

Maybe the clutching and such is tight when theyre new?
I thought of having it reset to pick up lower to the floor but I hate to screw w/ a new car.
If the clutch pedal take-up is bothering you, you can definitely adjust it. I'm not sure if the operation manual talks about how to adjust it, but it doesn't hurt to check. Maybe you can bring it to the dealership too and see if they're willing to help out. Nonetheless it WILL loosen up a bit as you rack up the mileage, so it's really up to you whether you wanna play with adjustment or not.
Also, just to add, IMO the shifter is a bit "hesitant" when the car's new. So even I had to force it a bit during 1st to 2nd gear shifting, but that's normal. Now is a bit better, still harsh though, but not too bad and nothing to complain about

Thanks for input

EchoHoLik Thank you thank you thank you
Hubby and I thank you we thought we were losing our minds and were a bit upset maybe we'd made a collasal error in the yaris and sad cause we do love it too.

We couldnt afford to go up a level in price so we were stuck, tho it was the yaris we went out shopping for thought we wanted coupe but I guess we are too old and too big cause it felt smaller then our metro did, at first we were bummed about that LOL.

Anyway...thank you so much you have no idea how much youve saved the sanity of two people Your explantion on e-throttle was exactly what we needed to know.

I also appreciated the support and info on the other issues.
Thank you for replying in such a great way!!!

same experience w/ ION vs Tercel

I bought a brand new Saturn ION back in 11/2006 with manual transmission and had much the same experience as you describe with the Yaris.

My cars through the years:
1979 Plymouth Arrow
1987 VW Golf
1992 Honda Civic CX
1985 VW Golf Diesel
1995 Ford Escort LX Wagon
2007 Saturn ION Sedan 2 Manual
1993 Toyota Tercel

Every single one was manual transmission so I feel I am reasonably experienced.

Anyway, I had the same sensation that all the fun had been sucked out of driving a manual transmission with the ION. It took me 7000 miles to get to that "drive it without working at it" point. Then I actually began to enjoy driving the ION and started to like it better. There is definitely a wierd throttle clutch timing that must be programmed into our subconcious in order to drive these cars smoothly.

Unfortunately, my brother ruined it all. He decided to ditch his 1993 Tercel, also a manual, and I couldn't resist it for $200. I hopped in the Tercel and was used to shifting it in 5 minutes. Later, I got back in the ION and it sucked all over again. I find the old Tercel far more fun to drive than the brand new ION and am actually trying to sell the ION. I think it is the damn drive by wire systems. That and the shift lever in the ION is about three feet too far towards the back of the car.

My advice is that you will, eventually, get used to the Yaris and, hopefully, begin to enjoy driving it. When you reach this point just be careful not to drive any older vehicles!

Makes me wonder tho because I had been thinking I should have bought a Yaris instead of the ION. I still might someday.

You're very welcome, artfreak Glad I'm able to help save you two from going insane Now go and learn and enjoy the Yaris

Btw, a little off-topic, what kind of art do you freak over? I like all sorts but I've always love the classic/renaissance era stuff, but two of my fav (in more contemporary sense) are Dali and Escher

Wow, you surely have driven it all But yeah, don't you hate it when a brother ruins your driving experience? LOL Although I've never driven a Tercel, I can just imagine those things are hella fun to drive. The Echo (and Yaris) are pretty much the "successors" to the Tercel, and I'm sure the levels of fun I get from my Echo have a long history that goes back to those venerable Tercels

Diesel_ Clatter: thank you for telling me of your experience...the more I hear the easier it is..we just thought what the heck is the deal here is this car defective or is it us!?

If we hop in and dont obsess about it and ignore it we're fine and this forum helped us w/ that but intially we were concerned there was a problem or we were causing one.

I have to laugh you saying about dont drive anything else once we adjust LOL !!

EchoHoLik: Yeah we are working on the just having fun w/it now And yes you said about trunk space it is nice and w/ a light too!! LOL

Art...well hubby is an artist he does water color and ink work mostly well I guess its childrens book style illustrative type art. He enjoys oils but Im allergic to them and right now he has no where else to paint.

He loves most types of art too inc what you mentioned Im working on a website for him (at a snails pace) but I will try to remember to give ya the link when its ready.

Maybe I will make an avitar of his stuff if its possible.

That's cool!! But damn, tell him to switch to acrylic if it makes you allergic j/king.....I've never used oil in my life, and not very good at watercolour, but I'm loving using markers, it gets similar results to watercolour (except for the textured-paper), but a lot less time consuming

Definitely, when you have your site up and ready, feel free to PM me the link. I'd surely check it out

LOL I'm guessing little in-law conflicts are typical, but hey, when you two try hard then nothing can come in between
