New Yaris vibration/rumble at 57-60 mph?

Hi Everyone,

I just bought my Yaris S and on the way home, discovered that it vibrates and rumbles rhythmically at 57 to 60 mph. It feels like going through a strip of rough asphalt or the engine revving (though the rpm doesn't change). It would last 1.5 seconds with a 0.5 seconds pause. It is faint so you would need a smooth stretch of highway to feel it. The best way is to put the car on cruise control at 58 mph, hold the wheel firmly with both hands and press your feet flat to the front of the floor. You can feel it coming in waves...

Has anyone else feel this with their Yaris? My dealer said that it's just 'normal', but I can't believe any new car would be designed with an obvious vibration and rumbling at 57 to 60 mph. I have thus far put on 200 miles solely for running back and forth to the dealer... never mind all the time taken off work!

Thank you all for your help.

tires might need balancing.

Keep in mind Toyota puts the sh1ttiest tires on every car they sell.

We have the same problem with our 07 Yaris Sedan, since new took it back 4 times they replaced the front hub and bearings and drive axles both sides. Just to say it's normal for the car. So I demanded a test drive in another yaris, they took one right off the delivery truck and that yaris made the exact same noise. We now have 33,000 miles on ours and the noise is still there. Seems that the faster you go the more rhythmically it gets. I feel your pain, my wife drives the car and doesn't really notice it when I drive it I can't stand it. Toyota told the noise is normal and is caused by the chain in the transmission!? Sounds kinda like b.s. to me.

They also balanced and rotated the tires made no difference, don't waste your time on that.

sometimes the actual tires' are at fault, Ive seen batches of tires that would balance fine on the machine but on the road would vibrate

Ditto that. The balance can be perfect, but the tire not round. Also internal defects can play hell.

Front End Noise in Yaris

[My '08 Sedan has what I describe as a "growl" noise at all speeds. From a standing start the noise begins and increases directly with the speed of the
car. In other words, it seems to be directly realted to the revolutions of the
two front wheels. Sounds somewhat like the sound of tires on the steel
grating of a bridge. However, the noise doesn't seem to be affected by a
change in the road surface.
What I've done so far is remove both front wheels and rev the engine up and down in neutral (Automatic trans). The growling sound seems to be absent and only the normal engine and trans sounds detectable. Also shifted trans into neutral on the road and sound remains, seemingly eliminating the trans itself.
Tires SEEM to be the source but if so, why isn't there more complaining
by new owners? Dealer says it's normal and typical of all small cars???
I suppose I can coat the wheel wells with some type of sound proofing
material and possibly put in some kind of sound deadening material to isolate the engine compartment from the interior of the car.
The Bridgestones have 45 psi and I considered lowering the psi at the cost
of a decrease in mileage but would probably tolerate the "growl" rather than
kill my mileage.
Thanks for comments from the Forum.

I know I'm digging up old forum, but did anyone really solve this problem yet?

I just bought 2010 4Dr Yaris Automatic last week and the car vibrates and hums at around 57mph to 62mph.

I don't think it's the tire.

I work as a Service Advisor at a Toyota dealer. The only problems we've seen related to the symptoms you have is wheel bearings. We do a lot of Echo, Yaris wheel bearings!

On older models we do a lot of front pipe exhaust donuts. They deteriorate and leak exhaust. That can cause a bit of a rumble sound. I'd put my money on wheel bearings though..

every tire has road noise. Every single one. They also all have a point where they are a little louder. The Yaris is an inexpensive economy car. It is not going to have an extra 100 lbs of insulation to completely isolate you from every bit of noise.

you are complaining about tire noise. Purchase quieter tires. Or buy and install a ton of insulation, or just buy a more expensive car.

Road noise is a pretty common complaint for small cars,it was about the only complaint for my 96 Tercel. It sounds pretty loud when you get on the highway.I got used to it and don't even hear it anymore. Not to say that is your problem.

The only vibration I hear is when the car is stopped. I have an ECHO. From what I hear that is the engine mounts. But when I put it in neutral or drive I don't hear the vibration. Its not all the time but sometimes it can get loud, not to mention annoying. But driving for me I don't hear it. just when at a stop.
