2003 echo + IAC valve

Hi,

I am useless with vehicles. (disclaimer out of the way).

I therefor put my trust in my local toyota dealership for my 2 toyotas.

My 2003 echo recently started idling rough, and when starting it in cold weather, it would stall. check engine light came on. Would have to keep my foot on the gas for a few minutes until car is warm enough before stalling ceased........anyway.........OH gas consumption was brutal. Used to get over 600km avg. (660 tops), now only 500km

took it to my dealer (western canada). they did a test and said it was my IAC valve. The cleaned it. Problem returned, and light came back on. They suggested a new part. What do I know, go ahead. C$800 later labour included, the car idles smoothly and doesnt stall.....BUT upon testing gas consumption, I am still getting just over 500!!

I went back to dealer and service manager says that this is normal, there needs to be a break-in period where all the parts need to work together again, and this will happen in 8000km!! huh, what? What do I know, right?....i left.......but it has been bothering me since. how can a replacement part take 8000km to work right? They assured me my gas mileage and such would be fixed after IAC was installed.

What advice do you experts have?

thanks

sb

I'm not expert but I smell B.S. from the dealer. Probably saying that so you shut up and don't bother them. I don't know.

He could be right, but like you said I've never heard of a part needed to break-in for that long of a period, considering its one part. Probably some what of a break in period but not that long and that intense I wouldn't think.

I assume you know the basic reasons you wouldn't get great gas mileage.
