Hopefully someone will reply to this thread unlike the others? lol...Is anyone planning to trade in his Yaris for the IQ when it hits the states? I am! I am excited about it.
I think the IQ is going to have to deliver the goods for people to buy it. It had better be priced right and it had better get 50+ MPG for people to sacrifice the space and handling. I'm not going to order one before I get to drive one but I'll seriously think about getting one. If they bring the 1.4 lt. diesel here I would be sold but the chances of that are slim to none.
The thing I like about it is that it is a wide micro. The smart looks like it'd tip over if you breath on it. The IQ is more proportional.
It is awfully small. The Yaris is small, but still plenty usable. This might be too tiny, but I'm open to test driving one - I might consider trading in my Echo on one in a few years. But Nigel is right, it better get some great mileage. I mean, the Smart doesn't do anything spectacular mileage-wise, so this needs to be well over 40 - pushing the 50 mpg range.
I don't know that the diesel would be a big seller here either. Diesel is more expensive than gas now, and they've never been big sellers in general (except in trucks).
Actually, I believe diesel is the way to go short of hybrids. Yes Diesel fuel is expensive but in the near future, prices will come more closer to gasoline if not a bit less.
I've seen people with diesel versions of Yarii in the Netherlands who break 60 mpg without even trying.
I also believe diesel will gain more prominence here as automakers need "quick" fixes for high mpg needs.

Brake lights aren't broken, I just don't brake.

I think diesel hasn't done well here because they've offered crap diesel engines in the past that had to be plugged in, ect. the new diesels are nearly as quiet, cleaner burning, have greater longevity/reliability and much higher MPG than gas engines. When you compare the new diesels to even a hybrid it's no contest. I'm wondering if Toyota and Honda won't bring their diesels here because it would cut into their hybrid (READ: overpriced) sales?

Yeah it's tricky. Diesel cars have gotten such a bad rap for so long, it will be tough to overcome. Plus, diesel fuel prices are tied into heating fuel prices here Stateside, so I don't know if we'll see it match back up to gas again or not.
I wouldn't mind seeing them though - I still remember my buddie's old Diesel Rabbit. The only reason he got rid of it was it got totaled by a pick-up!
