Question Is there a specific ignition starting way to do it or what?

I sound like an idiot but I know some cars have a specific way to start it up and sometimes my yaris (2008 sedan) will do nothing on start up no grind no nothing like I maybe did the wrong thing first.

I mean you know how some cars have to be in park, I have a five speed manual by the way.

It always starts fine.... then but the pause freaks me out cause when I retry its just nothing.

Its done this from day one, never got around to calling the dealer.

Its me I know it is I just dont know why...cant find anything in the book.

It hasnt happen a lot but when it does it scares me. Im always in first gear, clutch engaged brake on prob'?

By the way Im not an idiot, usually Im really quite good w/ mechanical things (not a mechanic tho) and pc's and such but ??? I did a search on this board then again maybe I am a dim wit maybe I didnt search right either LOL!?

My husband has never noticed it doing this to him so it has to be something Im not doing or doing.

Thanks for any pointers

Only thing that comes to mind is the clutch start switch. Have you try pushing the clutch pedal down a little bit more to see if that make any difference?

N.E.O.

I don't know. Maybe make sure it's in neutral with the clutch in instead of 1 or R? I wouldn't be totally surprised if there was some sort of neutral-sensing switch so you don't start up and slip off the clutch and start moving.

I have 5 spd as well.

Since you say that it doesn't do the same thing with your husband, then it's you and not the car. It doesn't matter what gear just as along as you have the clutch depressed enough or in your case make sure it touches the floor.

As for the pause, it's normal, just don't try to start it again before waiting at least a couple of seconds.

Lastly, the Yaris, when you turn the ignition to start, let go of the key when you notice it starting to turn, it'll keep turning until the engine is running (at least for 08s).

thanks :)

I appreciate the input, it could def' be Im turning the key more then once or not letting go. And I never paid attention to my how hard my foot is pressing the clutch pedal. I will pay more attention to these things and see.

Thanks for the ideas tho'

I usually put rubber mats in the car for winter but i have to trim the tops or the clutch pedal cant be depressed far enough to trip the safety switch and start the car.
