2007 yaris brake trouble

Hi everyone:

My Yaris is 2nd-hand, so not sure what happened in its previous lifetime.

I have a problem with the rear-passenger brake: occasionally, it catches stronger than the rest, to the point that the wheel locks. It happens when I first pull out of the garage in the morning or when I drive through rain and/or snow. Caveat: it is not consistent - it does not happen every morning, it does not happen each time I drive through cold & wet weather.

This is what I know & tried so far:
- I have ABS
- I don't use the hand brake at all
- my mechanic replaced the brake cylinder, which did not resolve the problem
- I experienced the same behavior with a rented Corolla a while back.

More symptoms:
- when the trouble occurs, there is squealing/grinding coming from that brake
- when I release the brake pedal slowly, the rear-passenger side "sags" because that brake stays locked longer
- when I pull the hand brake at low speed instead of using the brake pedal, I get the same symptom, i.e. squealing/dragging
- when I back up to see if this resets the brake, - when I step on the brake pedal, I hear a knock in that wheel, and it feels as if I drove over a bump (that side of the car goes up slightly).

Has anyone experienced anything similar? If so - what was the cause & the solution?

Your feedback will be highly appreciated.

Thanks for help.

you need to take off the wheel and drum and look at the braking assembly. maybe you have a return spring that broke or fell off or whatever... either way, you may be looking at replacing that drum brake assembly all together and it should be fine. or maybe you just need to replace some springs.

remember drum brakes are not nearly as linear as disc. so they grab nicely and softly then they lock up... there really isnt much modulation.
