Well, it's really up to personal preference. The honest truth is nowadays, you probably won't need it. Most likely, if there's any lemon-ness to the vehicle, you'll find out about it within the first few months in which case you should be covered by the standard warranty. If you make it out of the first year with no problems, then you probably won't need it for the next 6 years.
When you say free maintenance, do you mean free oil changes for the warranty term or really for as long as you own the car? At 40 bucks a pop (assuming no dealer coupons), that's worth 560 bucks over 7 years so I suppose you could say that lowers the cost of the gold package warranty to 740 dollars. But I would make sure that's what they mean.
That being said, I bought the full 7 yr/100k mile warranty, but I did so mostly b/c I got twice as much on my trade-in as I thought I would - so I spent it on the warranty. It is a nice little piece of mind thing and even though I know I probably won't need it I sort of feel like I got it for free. I only got the first three oil changes free though, so that's why I'd make sure of what they told you.
