Electrical issue with 2001 Echo

Hi

My father has been having some trouble with his 2001 Echo and since he's being more than apathetic about it, I've decided to take it into my hands to help him fix it.

The issue seems to be electrical. When the driver's side door is opened, the dome lights don't turn on when set to door mode, no chime rings if the headlights are left on when exiting through the driver's side, and the speaker (also in the door) doesn't work.

My father is an electrician and I'm sure the problem is fairly simple to fix, but he's wary of looking inside the door since he's not sure where the problem might be. I'm wondering if there's anywhere I can get a map of the electrical work in there or if anyone can suggest some easy places to get in and test the voltage.

It's not a fuse issue, we've changed all the fuses that could possibly be pertinent to this. And he's not too keen on taking it to the shop when he can drive the car fine anyway.

It's a 4-door 2001 Echo, fyi.

Thanks in advance!

Constant door usage can cause the wires in the sleeve between the door and chassis to break.

That's why I jump into my Echo like it's the General Lee.

Seriously though...

If you open the door and look at the doorjamb by the metal bracket (that the door latches on to) you'll see a little black nubbin sticking out. That's the button that is held in when the door closes. In = off and Out = on (much like the switch that activates your brake lights down on the pedal). So, when you open the door, that button is released turning on the dome and activating the key and light chime. I'd check that little switch. It may be stuck in or bad and it's simple enough to replace.
