Toyota Echo hard starting

My wife has a 2001 toyota echo. Once you've been driving it for a while and is fully warmed up, it's very difficult to start after stopping and sitting for a half hour or so. It takes alot of cranking before finally starting, when it does finally start, it runs very rough for a few seconds. I've found that if I crank it 2 or three times, wait like 5 seconds then try again it'll fire right up. When it's sat overnight or for a lengthy period of time where it's had lots of time to cool off, it starts right up. Very strange symptoms. Anybody got any insight what the problem may be or things to try?

When warm, does it start up fine immediately after turning off the engine and only has a problem when you let the car sit?

Any CEL?
Maybe running the car low on gas and refilling with name brand gas would help if it's still using old gas.

Yes once warm it will start up right away unless it sits for 30mins or more, basically enough time for it to cool down I guess.

There has been no CEL in the 2 1/2 years of ownership.

2007 Yaris does not like the heat!!!

Quote:
The fuel injection system is supposed to hold a residual gauge pressure of about 2 atmospheres 5 minutes after shutdown. Keeps the fuel from boiling under a hood with a hot engine and vapor locking. Yours could be losing pressure and forming bubbles in the lines. The dealer can check and fix that if necessary.
that might be your problem

That sounds like a very good possibility. To bad that post doesn't tell you how to fix it yourself and avoid the dealership costs

Many thanks for the manual!!

N00b - Thanks so much for the post. I was searching for info on how to replace the cabin air filter on my 2000 Echo and could find it NOWHERE. Thanks to your post, I was able to get the info PLUS figure out which direction to install the filter. You are the best!!
