Echo automatic shifter makes creaking sound

My girlfriend's 2004 Echo makes this weird creaking/groaning/clicking sound when moving the shifter upwards, like from drive to park. I took a video of it here to try and get the sound.

In the video I'm just moving the shifter slowly so that it makes the sound more drawn out. It doesn't feel like there's any more resistance than normal, but I've never been in another Echo to feel it.

Any idea what this would be? I'm wondering about possibly something sticky spilt and the plastic shielding parts are kind of sticking together or something, but I don't know. Can I take off the cover to see if I can find something stuck in it or something?

My dad spilled coke onto the shifter on our 02 camry, and it makes the same noise.

Take apart the housing and cleaning it should help.

i agree with andrew believe something is hung up in shifter. take cover off and clean it or use compressed air and try and blow it out or spray some wd-40 to wash it out

don't spray wd-40, you don't want that on the interior of your car.

take off the center console, and get to the shifter housing so you can wipe it clean.
