USA I think something is not right

I bought a 2008 Yaris last year, and have enjoyed it very much. Even with a couple little quirks:
  • When I pass someone, or get on it to reach freeway speed, it emits a stench
    • I attributed this to being a new car, but it didn't stop
    • I thought it was the fuel, but it does it regardless
  • Is it normal for my brakes to squeak at 32,000 miles?
    • I've never had a new car, but I don't think they should be wearing out yet! Could they just be cold? (I live in Wisconsin)
Other than those, and a speaker that makes an irritating racket, I have had nothing wrong with this car. I suggest buying one to anyone who wants good gas mileage, reliability, and a cute car that is fun to drive (except for passing b/c of the stink).

You are one Lucky Duck, Brand New Toyota & You Found Toyota Nation!

Brakes sometimes "sing" it has a lot to do w/atmospheric conditions don't worry.

Smell is trickier, as you "step on it" it should be smelling up the world behind you & not the passenger compartment.

The smell could be just solvents/oil residue evaporating as you "Push It" it gets hot {she's still a little wet behind the ears}.

USA Thanks

The Toyota was the best deal for the money, and hasn't let me down. It's worth more than a P.T. Cruiser of the same year that cost more to buy, the mileage is wonderful (have gotten up to 40.?? w/ Auto), and it sticks out in a crowd if it isn't hidden from view by a SUV or minivan.

Thank you for the help on the brake issue - that makes sense. I'm not sure about the oil part though. It isn't an oily smell...I've had old Dodges, and know that smell well (and Fords gave me the transmission smell lol)

Update & the dealership can bite me

The dealership called me back and informed me that
  • It was acceptable for the car to emit the rotten egg smell because gas has sulfur in it - okay
  • There was nothing that they could do
  • If there was something wrong with my catylitic converter, her CEL would have come on
  • I shouldn't believe all that I read online
All I can say is . So help me, if this continues (oh and it will, because it has done it off and on since shortly after purchase) I will be parking it on their doorstep -literally- and won't be dealing with service - I will be complaining to sales!

What type of gas do you use?

You could do a brake service, basically remove everything, clean and adjust

That TSB is for the 2007 model year.

The rotten egg smell is from hydrogen sulfide produced in the front catalyst that reduces nitrogen oxides. It happens whenever there's a significant amount of sulfur in the fuel and the mixture momentarily goes rich, as when you step on the gas. The EPA's been pushing down allowable sulfur levels in U.S. fuel and I don't smell it as often as I used to, but it's really just a fact of life with modern cars that they're going to let out a nasty SBD sometimes.

Try buying a different brand of gas; it might give less sulfur smell. I wouldn't change the catalyst, if it makes less sulfur odor you can bet it's also less effective breaking down the nitrogen oxides it's intended to.
