unknown cable from an echo 2001

i bought a 2001 echo and a little oval shaped cover was missing in front of the instrument panel, inside of it was a cable, can someone tell me what it is?

It's the trip reset switch from the 2002-08 and up (probably only seen on 2003 - 2005)

Can you reset the trip counter?

Looks like someone replaced the shroud around your cluster with one from a newer car

should i worry about it?, could they have changed the odometer with that thing? also the MIL light turned on today with P0040 code

No, don't worry. If you can reset your trip meter they probably only changed the trim and not the odometer. On the newer models the reset switch goes where that hole is.

Are you sure it;'s not code p0440 for the evap system?

no it was P0040, im going to check the O2 sensor with this guide http://www.carspace.com/guides/Toyot...ytic-O2-Sensor to see if that is the problem
