why is the 2003 rated higher mpg - Toyota Nation Forum : Toyota Car and Truck Forums

I'm looking to pick up a used Echo and see that on fueleconomy.org the 2003 model is rated with a higher mpg than the 2002. Can anyone say why this is? Supposedly its the same engine and transmission.

The reason I ask is that I had a 2002 Corolla that got about 10% worse mpg than my 2004 Corolla, and I never did figure that one out. Thanks

Since there are no engine or tranny changes which I can think of, I can only say Toyota might have adjusted or fiddled with the emissions components.

Will need more info, lol. But really 33 vs 32..that's not much of a difference. I'm sure you're getting way more that 32 mpg.

Maybe the EPA tests for both years straddled the line between 32 and 33 by a small increment. Measure the same car twice and you'd get different results.
