petrol smell

Hi,
I might have a problem with my Yaris 2000 1.3 VVTI.
Sometimes when i stop the car i can smell petrol from back side of the car.
Exept of that the car is running normally as usual.
Any ideas?

I almost forgot.I can smell petrol only by windows open.So it does not come from inside of the car.

Welcome to the forum Asmodeus.

May I ask if your fuel consumption has dropped?? I guess the first thing is to find where the leak is if there is one. You might need a friend to help you look/ and sniff out where the petrol is leaking from. There are no puddles on the ground?

Are you sure you're not just smelling the fuel smell from cold engine exhaust? Here we have gasoline with 10% ethanol in it, and I can smell a powerful ethanol odor from the tailpipe till nearly the time the "COOL" light goes off. The catalytic converter has to warm up to burn off the fumes.

Have you been "topping up" the gas tank? Toyota advises against that.

I've had two vehicles that would leak gas and make a terrible smell after I filled them, because the rubber vent hose from the top of the tank to the top of the filler neck had deteriorated. Your Echo is old enough for that to be possible.

One wasn't a 1991 Nissan Sentra was it? Her's used to do that.
By the way they were made in Tennessee.

Nope, a 1995 and a 1998 Mercury Villager. They weren't made in Tennessee, but their Nissan engines were, in Smyrna. The Villager and Nissan Quest were a joint project of Ford (Mercury) and Nissan, designed by a California consulting firm, powered by a Nissan powertrain, and built in a Ford factory in Ohio, I think. Basically just had different grilles and nameplates depending on whether they were going to a Mercury or a Nissan dealership. I've still got the '98. They put out a recall on those filler vent hoses and fixed them free.

Nice.

Nissan makes good vehicles, almost as good as a Toyota.
