My cousin owns an 07, i think, Yaris S 5spd. He has these preconcieved notions of making his car all wheel drive. IMO I think he just wants something that can beat my beamer lol.
So while I'm mechanically inclined, I'm not inclined enough to convert a fwd car to awd.
So at the risk of getting flamed, would you all be willing to pull up some information that the search function would not, and point me to who I should be PM'ing for information.
Don't you just love family?
If the suspension is set up right and the road course is tight the Yaris will hold its own against the BMW. My 04 ECHO hold it's own at Mosport DDT against a M3 believe it or not.
I have a hard time believe his stock yaris will hold its own against my 328ci
the only thing he has done is put in a k&n replacement air filter. hurray for .1 more horsepower and 5 less mpg! lol
havent seen your echo so i cant say i believe you or not, but if you did, then congrats
Has a lot to do with the drivers abilities,a very good driver in the Yaris would keep a poor driver in the 328 honest. As for your friend turning his Yaris into AWD? its going to be a lot of work and expense if its even doable, all for no real return in power,i think a turbo kit would probably be a better option for added power and if hes got the tuning, suspension and tires hooked up he will definitely give you a run for your money on a twisty road course.
As an example of good driver vs poor driver this WRX should not be having a problem with the Yaris sedan in front of him
In japan and australia it is available as awd. Overnight parts from japan! Lol
I do agree that a turbo kit would be much better than making it awd. But I'm not surehow strong the internals are being a 90 hp car. I'm sure a low 5 lbs of boost would be safe enough for the car and give him a decent increase in power.
But he is still insistant on awd'ing his yaris, I'm guessing he would need the entire drivetrain, the suspension, brakes and brake lines, ecu, shifted assemply and clutch lines. I know there are things that I can't think of. Has anyone ever even attempted this, or did they just go and buy an awd car?

From similar experiences in the mk3 vw world, where there was an awd version available in germany but not in north america, It'll be much easier to buy the shell from japan as a part and graft in all the components, underbody cut outs and floor pans, suspension parts, gas tank, brakes. When all was said and done, I think the price was around $5000, it'll probably be more for the newer car though. Also, unless he REALLY loves this car, it'll be A LOT cheaper (and easier) to just buy a car with AWD already. This is a VERY complex and difficult project... gives me a brain freeze thinking about it
Also, a limited slip differential will help out a ton with the fun factor, not sure if there is one available for this car, maybe for the scions though.....(?)

The conversion is a waste of time and money .
He should get a sportier car to compete, or get over it.
Don't take this the wrong way but don't BMW's need a "pit crew" to keep them running right?
i suggested he should get a better platform for modding. and i we actually arent competing. i dont race unless its on a strip or course. he just wants to do the uncommon thing is more than likely what he really wants. and i guess awd just got stuck in his head cuz someone told him that its been done before.
no, they dont need a pit crew, but they are definately more complicated. i bought a 5 year warranty to go with mine, and part of that warranty states that a licensed shop has to do all the work
but atleast it saves me a headache lol
