Few performance questions

I have a few quick questions about performance modification to the echo.
I dont want to do much to it, as it was the reliable/winter alternative to my other cars.
I just want a basic intake, and a more free flowing exhaust that still is quiet.

What will those do on this car?
I ask because in my experience with newer economy cars, every ounce of power possible (reliably and cheaply) is squeezed out of the engines and intake and exhaust work (especially basic intake) dont do much.

If I was to bend an aluminum intake arm with open element filter and widen the downpipe a half inch and put in a test pipe, would I see a noticeable gain?

not one of those guys that thinks ricing out the echo makes it fast, just want to ease the pain from the 400+whp to <100 transition.
I was actually pleasantly surprised with its performance to mpg ratio :p, though I have to admit the 500 dollar turbo kit looks tempting, i think its best to just leave this thing bpu and reliable

pick up a used intake from a gen1 xb or xa

likely have to get a custom exhaust

header id run dc

nst or unorthodox racing underdrive crank pulley

w/ i/h/e/p youre likely to gain about 10-15whp on stock, does sound like a lot, but when you consider thats 10-15% on a 2100lb car, it makes a difference

good luck

wow 15 to the wheels! didnt expect that from those mods to this engine. Very nice

Cant find a used intake and people around here dont seem to think parts from those cars depreciate so would this fit?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/03-04...Q5fAccessories

I have a feeling it would be cheaper than a used intake and my time and effort to meet someone elses schedule to get it.

car could use an air filter change anyway.

ebay one is ok, but you'll want a k&n cone filter on the end....the ebay filters arent great.

Veru true, I have a K&N filter but I think its a four inch filter and even with adapters may not be suitable for that intake.

Well, I made some custom pulleys (crank and alternator), bent some exhaust and cut out the cat, got that intake and did some throttle body work and am VERY impressed and pleased with the results. I really wanna make a setup with one of the stock turbos I have lying around and give it a few pounds of boost just because the face of someone who just lost lane jockeying to an echo is always priceless. But I think I am gonna slow down for now.

If anyone is interested I could start selling these pulley sets, of course after I run mine for a while to see if it has any problems. Have made and sold custom pulleys for the supra and 3000gt before so no worries.

Solace 87 can you tell me what work you carried out on the throttle body?? I picked up a used one for 20 bucks, I have taken it apart and glass beaded everything so far. I dmaged the shaft when I tried to remove the screws from the butterfly.

I bored it out as much as possible while still maintaining any structural integrity then made a matching butterfly for the new dimensions.
I also adjusted the throttle cable to remove the small amount of slack you get in the stock setting.

Throttle Body

I was thinking of doing the same. But leave the bore of the butterfly the same diameter and then polish the interior of the body??

Did you notice much of a difference??

I sent a reply but I dont know where it went. I am new here!!!!

I have a small lathe and I was thinking of doing the same but leave the size of the butterfly the same. I dont have the knowledge or tools to make a new butterfly.

I would like to polish the inside of the bore

Did you notice much of a difference??

well if you just bored up to the butterfly and not past it you could use the stock one, but if you modify the whole thing you are going to want to use a new butterfly or the cars idle will not be right

Oh and about the difference, it all depends on what else you have modded. from my understanding the intake just helps suppliment other mods.

I am forever tempted to really mod this car because it weighs almost half of what the cars im used to modifying do, but I need it to be reliable.
