The infamous P0505 Code

My girlfriend has a 2000 Echo and had this code diagnosed. We had the Idle Air Control Valve removed, cleaned, reinstalled. Still came on. Cleaned the Wires, Came on a day or two later. Replaced it with a used part we got for next to nothing (no gaurantee it would work). Worked for 3 days, came back on. Now that we're moving into the replacing it stage, the problem is, most places I've looked don't have an "Idle Air Control Valve" but rather an "Idle SPEED Control Valve". Now, to me, these are two totally different things, but from what I've been reading they're both located in the same spot, so my question is - Are they the same part?

same thing

since you've replaced the idle air control valve, have you checked for any hoses that may be cracked or have become disconnected?

It was replaced with a part that was used and may or may not have been functioning, its why it was pretty much free. Yeah, I've made sure all the hoses are there and in one piece - but since it's the same piece, I'll order it tomorrow. Thanks.

I'm a wee bit new here.

This is the exact reason I even signed up on this forum. I was interested in more information about this problem because $500 is a lot to get this fixed on a car I paid $1600 for.... But now that its winter and snowing, I might just fork out the money to get it replaced.

As you can see I don't really have anything to add. But just sharing in my frustration with this problem.

I will be looking for any guides to try and resolve this problem without spending $600.

i had P0505 once shortly after purchase of my second hand '00 solara se (gen4 camry based). i also had a bunch of pending codes assisting it, happened to me 3 years ago.

don't remember exactly what i did to fix it, but replaced the spark plugs for sure (one was fouled) and cleaned battery connections. also i think back then i asked friend to adjust the idling speed (affects mostly Park & Neutral gears only) with Throttle Adjustment Screw which turned out to be a bad idea in a long run (long story) - anyways don't do that, this tiny screw affects too many systems, leave it alone no matter what or at least do it right with use of obd2 live monitoring software connected to car.

also make sure all fuses are all right or simply replace them all if they are old. some Female MAXI fuses tend to give signs of going bad long before they visibly burn out.

11 year old Echo? i think unless there was a significant problem with idling or fuel usage i'd just leave it alone for now as the repair may cost more than the car is worth.
