Canada first car, a Toyota Echo.

I just bought a toyota echo, 250 000km. It is a 2001, i paid it 1200$, i think i could not let pass this deal.
But the gaz mileage is very bad, my tank is almost empty and i got 350km on it, it is mostly city driving but still bad. the guy that sell it to me said one of the oxygen sensor does not work. i know its controling gaz/air mix and all, but can it affect gaz mileage that much ??

Hello there, Welcome to TN.

Yes. You will need to look into getting that part fixed, it is a major component to your low mileage. That is a very good deal on your car, fixing this minor issue should give you a lot more miles!

Canada Should get double that

I've gotta Echo Hatch 05 and it gets 624km from full to empty (flashing)...so you really gotta look into that. Enjoy the new ride aside from that problem.

Hey Abitibi, .... my welcome also to the forum, .. lucky you to have one of these as your first car, .... if you've got a sensor out there should be a "check engine" light showing on your dash display. An OBD II scanner (aka code reader) will tell you which sensor is faulty. The others are correct in that if it's an oxygen sensor that's faulty then the engine will not get the correct fuel mixture. I have changed O2 sensors myself but they're usually nasty jobs involving under-the-car work and VERY tight large fittings. De tout facon I look forward to seeing you on this forum as other aspects of the car come to your attention. There's even a sub-forum for bragging about fuel economy !!

thanks denman, i just look in the maintenance document of the car and i found a document showing the bad sensor, it is the Bank 1, Sensor 2, the 4 wire sensor.
I got it remove and i bought a new one but the tread in the exaust pipe are almost all gone now. I think i am gonna weld it on the pipe...
