Toyota Belta - Engine keeps cranking after start

Hi all,
I have just bought a used toyota belta (a.k.a yaris) 1000cc and i am having some trouble with the starter when the engine is cold in the morning. When i turn my ignition key to start the engine, i see that the starter keeps cranking even after starting the engine. I have tried putting a new battery but the problem is still there. The only workaround i have for now is to turn off the engine while the cranking goes on, then restart again. I am fed up with this problem as no mechanic is able to understand what is going wrong. Any help will be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

No, this is not normal. The normal behaviour would be that the engine stops cranking as soon as the engine starts.

Sometimes a starter drive will get dirty and bind, so it doesn't kick loose from the flywheel ring gear as it's supposed to immediately.

I see. Is there anything you can suggest in terms of how to fix this issue. My real concern is that no electrician has even got a clue about this problem;(

Any chance it could be a problem with the ignition switch?

A binding starter drive is a mechanical problem. You have to take the starter off to work on it. As said above, it sounds like this car ought to still be in warranty.

My 2010 Yaris with 1,200km on the clock has done this since I picked it up from the dealer 3 weeks ago, it happens on and off, in the mornings and afternoons.

Its going back to the dealer for the 2nd time in 2 weeks to get sorted, I will keep you posted on the outcome
