2002 Yaris deceleration

I love my Diesel Yaris except for one thing, 5 times, over its 110,00 life, the car suddenly decelerates and the "somethings wrong with your car" light goes on. I limped into the dealer the first time it happened and they said it was something to do with the accelerator but not to worry. I won't drive it on the motorway for fear of this problem. I'd get killed doing a sudden deceleration from 70 to 20! I phoned Toyota hotline to see if this issue is a known problem. They said "no". Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to get it fixed?

Do cars sold in the UK have the OBD II port, as all cars sold in the US since January 1, 1996 do? Surely it's got that or some equivalent way of getting an error code that leads you to a limited set of things to check. Error code scanners here have gotten quite affordable.

Just speculating, one thing I'd wonder about is a temporary interruption of fuel flow to the Diesel fuel injection pump from water in the tank, or perhaps an air bubble in the fuel line. If it's injecting water or not getting fuel to the pump, the engine power suddenly drops off, and after the water blob goes through or the air bubble's passed, the engine's normal power returns. Check your fuel filter for water.

Yes we have the tools to pinpoint the problem in Scotland. It is apparently the accelerator pedal. Just wondering if it is a known problem with the Toyota Yaris or a problem just with my car.

Thanks for the tip. I'll make sure I mention this to my Toyota dealer to check out if perhaps it is water in the filter rather than a more expensive fix.

Cheers

I had that problem shortly after buying my 08 sedan with 1.5l engine, the engine light would come on and the car would just go to idle and no amount of pushing the gas pedal would change it,the problem was very random and could happen when pulling away from a traffic light or cruising at speed on an expressway, usually turning the car off and on again would solve the problem for a while.Brought the car into the dealer and they replaced a bunch of wires in the engine bay and the problem has never returned in over a year and a half and 50k kilometers of driving, when i did bring the car in i definitely got the impression from the service manager that he was familiar with the problem as he didnt want to hear about my own personal diagnosis that its probably a bad throttle position sensor he just said dont worry we'll fix it and it is under warranty ..
