Driver's Side Floor Mat Retainer Advice

I am in need of suggestions with this one. I have a 2000 Echo Coupe.

I recently noticed that the plastic retainer hook that holds the floor mat from slipping forward under the pedals that is attached to the floor has come loose from its mount on the metal floor under the carpet. I can't see under it (without making the hole in the carpet bigger), so I can't tell how it was attached before it came loose.

Anyone have any ideas as to how that was attached to the floor? Does anyone have any suggestions for me about how to re-attach it? Is it a screw(s), or would epoxy hold it? I can cut a slit in the carpet to get it out and look if I NEED to, but I'd hate to cause damage to the carpet if I don't have to.

Let me know if anyone has any thoughts. Much apprecaited!

it was attached to the lower carpet inside a metal grommet, not the floor

Ok, good to know. Thanks Stevo! I'm just going to epoxy it to the bottom of the carpet and set something heavy on it overnight to get it to bond. That should hold it. Sounds a lot easier than trying to cut it out, then attaching it to the metal floor, THEN gluing the carpet back over the top anyways. Much appreciated!
