The easiest place to wire it to is the OBDII port (which is used for diagnostic checks). If you look under the driver's side of your dash, towards the footwell area, you'll see a 16-pin port.
The first pin of the second row is the engine speed output. You can tap into this by using a spade terminal, or by splicing the wire behind it and teeing it off to your aftermarket rev counter. Then all you'll need is a 12v power source for the gauge (such as from the cigarette lighter port), and a ground for the lights (any bare piece of metal connecting to the chassis).

So if I am understanding well, does this OBDII port form part of the ECU? And when you say the dirvers side, are you referring to the left side or right? Cos my echo is right hand drive...

Yep, the OBDII port runs directly from the ECU, which is how it gets its trouble codes when you do a diagnostic check. The port will be on the driver's side regardless of if it's LHD or RHD. So in your case, it'll be on the right hand side of the dash

What exactly did you do? As long as you've got the correct wire for the gauge hooked up to the engine speed output wire on your Echo and have the 12v power source hooked up, it should work fine.

Well i got the tachometer (green) wire of the rev counter. Power wise I have already got it connected to the cigarette lighter because I have got a backlight in the rev counter. However I did not connect the shift light wires yet. Should that make a difference? And by the second row of the port do you mean the bottom one? And the first one from which side, left or right?......by the way excuse me for all these questions but I m quite new to this stuff and I am finding your help very useful. MUCH MORE USEFUL THAN ALL THE ELECTRICIANS I ASKED IN THE COUNTRY I LIVE IN!

No worries about the questions, I'm happy to help . The disconnected shift light shouldn't have any influence on whether or not the tachometer works.
As for the ports location, it's the first pin on the second row (the whole row is for the engine speed output, but it's best to use the first pin as this one is fused). If you look at the diagram I posted earlier, it will be port 86.
Let me know how you get on

I tried looking at the main ECU but the diagram in the link above is nothing close to what is in the car. For starters there is only one row of plugs :S and the diagram shows two :/
Hmm, that's strange. Your engine is the 1NZ-FE right?
Here's a couple of different diagrams of the ECU, where the crankshaft position sensor wire comes, and where a wire labelled 'TAC' goes from the ECU to the diagnostic port under the dash (I've marked it with arrows) -

Yes it is a 1NZ-FE for sure. So if I understood well can I connect to the wire going to the crankshaft position sensor?
Yes, that's correct . The crankshaft position sensor is what reads the speed of the engine (RPM), and feeds that info to the tachometer inside the cabin. You should just be able to tap into it with your aftermarket rev meter wire.
