I just bought my 05 Echo a few weeks ago, and I've filled up three times so far. Really really happy with the milage I've been getting so far. Mixed city and hwy I've been getting between 43 and 47 mpg (Imp gallons) or between 5.7 and 7 lt/100 kms. Not bad at all.
I'm anxious to try a long distance trip so I can burn a tank just on the hwy. I'm betting I can easily break 50mpg with straight up hwy driving.

Great to hear that you're enjoying the MPG achieved so far . My dad's 1500cc Vitz RS literally seems to run on the smell of an oily rag. What size engine have you got in your Echo? (1000cc, 1300cc or 1500cc). Keep us updated as to how you get on during a long distance trip

My Echo is a 1500cc 5 spd 2-dr hatch. I'm pretty sure the 1500 is the only engine available in Canada.
Yes,
My echo was brought over from canada to the states and its a 1.5 as well.
You will not be dissapointed highway driving. I recently drove from Chicago to Buffalo with mine and even with the car loaded, my girlfriend blasting the AC, and her frequent stops to look at tourist traps I was still getting 4xmpg
I could not be happier with my echo.

Just bought our 2005. My wife drives 110 kms a day, she works at our church. the first week she managed 700kms on a tank of gas. I have changed the plugs and installed a new air filter and we had air conditioning installed and still get excellent mileage
My 05 Echo has given me a best mileage of 4.8 liters per 100 kms.
My 08 Yaris hasnt got below 5 Liters per 100kms
With mileages this good you have to wonder why a lot of people still drive around in personal vehicles that barely get 20mpg.
It sure is nice to have cars that i fill up once a month, leaves me a lot more money for beer

You're absolutely right, and I get a kick out of people worrying about the price of gas, and getting stressed out thinking the price is going to rise over the summer. The price could double, and it would still be cheap to drive my Echo.
Of course, the only problem with having a car so good on gas is that I drive it way more than I would otherwise. I'm always jumping in it to go for a drive somewhere, but that's ok, since the whole reason I bought it was so I could do alot of site-seeing and exploring this summer.

Well, I did an 8 hour trip in the Echo, and I was surprised to find I didn't match my best milage so far, never mind breaking 50mpg.
I put almost exactly 650kms on the the first tank, and it took almost exactly 40 lts, so 6 lts/100kms, or 44.3mpg. I guess the higher speeds I was doing on a long trip outweighed the typical advantage you'[d get on the hwy. I was doing 120kph pretty much the whole time.

Thats very normal in these cars. Keep it around sixty and you will get better mileage but honestly nothing wrong with mid forties. Being from Chicago I take any chance I get to go 70 or 80 while traveling. You can rarely do that here.
Also another thing I have noticed with these cars (have tested it with 2 of them) It seems like it takes them more effort to go from 60 to 70, then from 70 to 80.
I drove 2 and it seemed to take longer and more throttle to do it on both.

Oh yeah, I think 44mpg was pretty good. Certainly alot cheaper than doing the same trip with my pick-up truck as I'm getting almost 3x the milage.
I got 4.7L /100KMs on a long trip. Never could reach that with the new tires. They grip a lot more, but steal 1L/100KM easily. When they are worn out, I'm going for low rolling resistance tire (LRR) despite the lessened grip.
Let us know how your experience with the LRR tires are.
Im curious but in a car this small I want all the grip I can get, especially with the fwd setup.
