Rear speakers on an Echo Hatch?

I am new to this forum, and new to the Echo... just bought a 2004 HB yesterday.

I tried searching this forum, but no luck...

Has anyone here installed rear speakers in a HB, and if so, where did you install them?

I took a quick look in the back yesterday, and there didn't seem to be any good spots to mount a couple of speakers - except for possibly in the spare tire cover if some of the tools were removed.

Thanks for any help.

I would suggest getting some of those premade 6x9 boxes and bolting those somewhere. Its your best option as mounting speakers to something not completely solid is going to end up with problems.

I installed my speakers under the flip up deck. Taped all the wiring to the underside of the deck and provided disconnects for the wiring at the plastic panel at the passenger side at the rear of the car. So that if I ever want to raise or remove the deck. I can just disconnect the wiring. Not the best way to install the speakers, but I find that we hardly use the trunk on the hatchback. I have also removed the spare tire and use the well where the tire goes as storage space. I know I am going to eat my words, but I cannot remember any time where I have been in a situation where I have had to use the spare tire.

Thats usually how it works haha.
My insurance company will tow you home or bring you a spare once every 3 months I think so the first thing I did was remove mine. Weight reduction and space :p

Also, just curious. What size and model speakers did you use?
A decently aimed set of good 6x9s in this car make a world of difference!

All speakers are made in China, I think they are all substandard. We were coming home from Church one Sunday and there was a speaker store open and I bought a pair of 6 x 9's for 25 bucks. But it made a tremendous difference in the sound. I had replaced the fronts with a set of better speakers "Alpine" SPS 400??? But even with better speakers in the front they still sounded tinny. The ones in the rear really made a difference.

Yeah with 6.5 inch speakers like they have up front you are not going to get much of a difference with the stock head unit or just using a head unit to power it. You need an amp to push the premium 6.5s to get better sound.
6x9s however can give full range sound even using a head unit.

Huge fan of putting 6x9s wherever possible.
I have a set of 6.5in MB Quart 3 way components and my sub 100 dollar kenwood 6x9s still sound better haha.

as for the sps400s, thats a 4 inch speaker. Does the hatch really come with 4" speakers stock up front?

Yes the hatch come standard with 4" speakers in the dash. The front door speakers were not in my 05. I thought the speakers in the back would give better sound.
