2001 Echo Stuck in Park

My 2001 Toyota Echo is stuck in park at a friends house its an auto. All the lights and electrical components work and the car starts fine the only problem, kind of a big one, it wont shift out of park. The button you press to unlock the shifter is stuck. I have my foot on the break, doors closed, seat belts on and still stuck. I can hear the area around the shifter 'clicking' when I press the break in (maybe the safety measure for the unlock mechanism ?) but the shifter is still stuck. I also tried the manual override of the safety system (a little bit you pop up near the shifter and push down) still stuck... I have no idea whats going on gonna take it to the dealership tomorrow, or more so get the dealer to pick it up then get it to the dealer. Any ideas ?

When you receive the report after the repair is made I'd be interested in the details. Thanks!
