stuttering after normal highway run

as the title states I was coming home from class and got off the highway and was applying breaks like normal heading to a stop light. next thing i know the engine starts stuttering like crazy. put it in neutral rev it some and everything starts idling like normal.

Any one have any idea what might have caused that to happen.

and as far a speeds go it was 78 MPH down to well stopped
