Question 2001 Echo, bone stock. Idle, and fuel problems. help?

A few days ago, I noticed that after accelerating and letting off the gas pedal, the car would begin to jerk forward, rather than coast smoothly. When the gas pedal was pressed again to accelerate, there was no problem.

Also, the gas mileage has been terrible. Rather than having a full tank last around a week (the usual for me), I'd have to refuel around every 3 days. Just today, at half a tank, a 15 minute trip on the freeway at 75mph left my tank at a little above a quarter tank.
I know my car is due for an oil change and tune-up, but any other ideas as to what the problem could be?

Lastly, the car seems to hum very loudly and there's a grinding noise when brakes are used at a slow speed. If going faster than 40mph, I don't usually hear any grinding noise.

This is a car I purchased used around 2 years ago. Since then, there have been 4 oil changes, new rear tires/alignment, and a vacuum hose had popped off about a year ago but that has been fixed as well. Other than the previous stated I'm not aware of any other problems. Any help/ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! :]

Hi there sunny Flowers, welcome to TN!

Sunny, have to made sure that you are driving in 4th (D) gear and not 3rd (3)- or OD off if you have Overdrive? Your description makes me think that the car is driving in 3rd gear as its top gear instead of 4th gear.

Pertaining to the grinding noise, when was the last time you or the previous owner serviced the brakes?

I never drive my car in anything other than 4th, I don't really trust it too much to do otherwise lolz.

Brakes were done a long time ago, I need to get them done again sometime soon. Replacing rotors and pads. :-)

Thanks for your help btw. Would it have to do with maybe some sort of fuel regulator or a faulty pump or anything?
