Advice shocks and struts

I need to replace my struts and shocks on a 2000 Echo. I'm leaning towards buying KYB GR2s and reusing the stock springs. I would like to upgrade springs sometime in the future if I'm not happy with the feel. Nothing crazy but something with a 1-1.5" drop max. I don't mind a stiff ride but nothing bone jarring since this is still a daily driver and would like to autocross a little next year.
Let me know your thoughts/questions/concerns on doing this.
I'm also reading that Scion XB shocks/struts fit. Should I be looking in this direction since it seems like there is alot more choice.

Thanks

Monroe shocks are basically oem replacements, they'll do you well if you just want decent replacements.
