Canada engine overheat lights on

Hi Folks,

I just joined this Forum and I need advise... I have a 2004 echo - 132,000 km.

Symptoms - the engine overheat light comes on after I drive a few kms, then it goes away when I stop at a red light and comes on again after a few kms. when I switch on the heat ,the heat is very feeble.

Took it to the dealership, Replaced T-stat, checked RAD - flowing fine, heater core - no obstructions , new water pump. They advised me it needs headgasket repair and suggested they can get a used engine + labour = 3000 dollars, which i will end up broke.

I did some research ..what about heater core valve?..any advise appreciated
Thomas

My 01 Echo had the overheat light come on if i got stuck in heavy traffic,Turning on the heater and fan would have it go off in a minute or until i got moving again.
This dealer you are going to sounds like he's taking advantage of your lack of knowledge,i'd definitely get a second opinion before he tries to replace the whole car,,You in Montreal?

it sounds like they really don't know what the problem is, otherwise they would probably advise replacing the head gasket which would cost less than 3000

For the odd time i'd get stuck in traffic and the light came on i'd just run with the heater on till traffic got rolling again.if that light is coming on at highway speeds then you have more of a problem, stuck thermostat, blockage in the rad..If when checking the oil the oil looks like whipped chocolate milk then you have coolant contaminating your oil..

Hi Paul,

I've not been there myself, but a friend with an older RAV4 recommends Toytech. Parsons Road and 28 Ave NW.

Which dealer suggested replacing the engine? I'll steer clear of them for sure.
In any case, I'd never take my car to a stealership.
