I am looking to buy a yaris soon, what is your opinion on the car?
Hi,
I just sold my 1996 Toyota Corolla and now looking for a used Toyota Yaris (a 2007 to 2009)
I was wondering what is everyone's opinion on the car, pros and cons etc.
I currently have a 2010 Corolla but would like a second car for city activities or shopping needs for fuel efficiency.
When buying the Yaris, should I look for something specifically, like mechanical operation or certain things the Yaris might have problems with?
I had a rental yaris for a day but didn't make any highway trips, city i found was fine as i did not need much power to zip around, how is highway driving? I see alot driving at 120 km/h or more
The Yaris engine (1.5) is the same that was used in the Echo, and are known for their reliability, most will go past 300,000 miles. However, as Zembonez has said, it's not really the best highway car (revs high, less power than a Prius) and I would be afraid to get in an accident in it. I would stick with the Corolla......they get 35+ mpg highway, pretty comparable to the Yaris. You're not going to be saving much in terms of fuel economy if you pick one up.
Mechanically they do well. There's nothing really electrical that will break because it doesn't come with anything, lol. The best you can get is power locks/windows.

Chris: I have an Echo and the two previous responses are correct. But I think the machine is great. It may be tinny and tiny, but I think it is a lot of fun to drive, not uncomfortable and it has (maybe not lots) power.
My wife drives ours every day to work and back 110 kms.
The other day just for fun I was on the 401 and I took the little machine up to 100 MPH. Not KPH but miles per hour without any problem. There are lots on the highway and they all scoot along at the speed of the surrounding traffic.
The machine we have is a 2005 and there is very little sign of any rust. Starts like a charm.
Just a reliable vehicle and I have found it fun to drive.
you want "a second car for city activities or shopping needs for fuel efficiency" well you can't go wrong with the YARIS .when the wifes 2001 ECHO totals out i will get her a YARIS but auto ..i don't see any differance and realy hate changing throw out bearings and the clutch ..
Efficient around town vehicle if highways are not something you do. I'd pass in an instant if I had highway driving in my daily routine.
My 08 sedan has gone from Montreal to Florida 3 times and Montreal to Vancouver twice(fully loaded with family) , i find the car comfortable, reliable and economical and although it lacks some of the room and luxury a larger SUV would offer i find the car good value for money..
No idea why you'd want a Yaris as a second car when you already have a Corolla. The gas mileage is not that much of a difference.
But the Yaris is awesome.
I agree with Why? The Yaris is a great thrifty and reliable car, since you already have a Corolla I would stick with that as the Corolla is a great city car and also very economical.

I just bought the 09 Yaris. I drive it on the freeway to and from work about 15 miles each way without issues. But I am no longer a super zoom person either. But I run it it at 60 no issues. Crushable yes I can very well see that lol. I like it.
The Yaris is a great daily compared to the Corolla. BUT.. Corolla has a slight advantage over room in the back seat as well as trunk space. I have an 08 Yaris, standard. The only thing annoying with it is the flimsy gear box. Mine has a reverse issue which gives off a loud CRASHUGACHURGASHNK! when putting in reverse. Developed after a year though..

BTW, that's symptomatic of a mis-adjusted clutch that's not releasing fully. Makes it 'grunchy' going into forward gears, 'grind-me-a-pound' going into reverse.
I can def. speak to and give good advice about this as I had a 2008 Yaris and now a 2011 Corolla. Yaris overall is a fine car. I got 30miles per gallon consistently with city and highway driving. Yaris is small. Yaris is slow. Especially when merging onto highway etc. Yaris is NOT A SAFE car. I got into a minor accident rear ended and the car basically dissolved and caused me back pain which I still have today. I got into a jeep after because i was paranoid with safety but I am back to toyota with my 2010 corolla I got recently. Yaris with power options is around 15k and corolla le is probally around 16500 and it is well worth the money. You get a bigger car, top safety pick, VERY reliable and overall a better buy go on ebay and see how the yaris commands less money used and then see how corolla maintains residual value. If you have further questions feel free to PM me, as im not really on the yaris side of this forum ever.
