Wiring Problem 2000 Echo

Hi, I recently replaced the stock head unit in my 2000 echo with a new Kenwood head unit. When I wired it up there were a couple of spare wires coming from the car so i left them unconnected, now whenever I turn the head lights on the car on the light indicator on the dash does not appear and none of the lights on the dash switch on. My only diagnosis for this is that the dashboard lights were relayed through the stock head unit, but the new head unit does not support this. Is there a way i can bypass the head unit with the wiring? Does anyone hear have experience with this? Any help would be appreciated.
