Small as these cars are, they are pretty darn resilient. It's not unheard of these cars lasting 200,000 miles (321,868 km) on the original drivetrain (engine & trans) equipped with an auto or manual trans. My buddy bought a 2001 Echo used with 15,000 miles on it 9 yrs ago and today with 175,000 miles it still runs perfect, I am familiar with his car as I help him with all maintenance and repair. The only real expenses he incurred are tires and batteries which is normal for any car. The most important thing I would look into is maintenance history namely oil changes; verify that the previous owner kept up with scheduled oil changes, look for receipts, look into the valve cover through the oil filler cap for any signs of sludge build up. Good luck! If your looking for a no frills, economy car that is very reliable then I think you'll be happy with the Echo.
