I forgot to plug the MAF connector back in. That was silly. The Echo with 236,000 miles has been running like new ever since I plugged the connector back in . So cleaning the fragile MAF sensor with electronic cleaner and a Q-tip while the battery is disconnected and had fixed this problem in the first place. It seems to occur when the air filter needs to be replaced. This a good tech tip for Toyota Echos, I think. I am not the first one to discover this simple, quick fix.
