My yaris is an o8 sedan.

The reason I wonder isnt so much for convenience of the dummy lite but incase its an indicator of something else?

I do wonder if maybe the mechanic at local garage did something not knowing how to disable it, but they say no.
I usually reset it before it went in tho' so thats not it prob'.

I realize some folks want it off

Wow.. I don't know or have heard of it, the function being turned off.

All I can say is to reset it yourself and see if it pops up around the time 5k passes from now. If you don't know how the steps are:
1. Hold down the trip button.
2. Ignition to ON.
3. You'll see the miles disappear and bars in their place. The bars will then sequentially disappear.
4. Once the bars are gone, take your finger off.

I suggest you dedicated either trip A or B to count down for you (or up in this case). The light should start blinking at the last 500 miles then turn off. At 5k, the light stays on until it is reset.

My next question to you is if the light comes on at all when you first turn the key to on (that time when everything comes one)? --- I'm wondering if the bulb is out, which would be rare.
