Echo strange idle noise

Hello,

I have a 2002 Echo and the idle noise is very strange. It's like low frequency vibrations and it's only when the motor is warm. Sometimes it's at idle rpm and sometimes a little bit after.

I checked the idle rpm with a warm engine and it's 650 rpm, I don't know if it's normal. The noise looks to come from the engine itself or maybe the exhaust.

What do you suggest to check?

Thanks.
Jean-Paul

Hi,

I changed the sparks, the air filter and check the MAF sensor and I still have that noise. It sounds a little bit better than before but it's still here.

Do you have any idea of where it can come from?

Thanks!

No there's nothing.

The noise is present at a rpm a little bit higher then idle now. Also when I shift gears.

That sounds a bit low for an idle on a little 4-banger. For the noise I'd get a stethoscope and try to narrow down the noise location. Top end could be a rocker shaft bearing, middle possible piston slap or wrist pins. lower could be big ends or main bearings. If you're not getting oil pressure warnings or oil loss about all you can do is drive it and don't worry until it gets worse and easier to diagnose.

Is it possible to increase a bit the idle rpm?

I don't have a stethoscope and it's hard to tell where it comes from exactly. I'd say from the exhaust pipe. It appears only at a specific rpm.

Thanks.

My 2000 Echo has an Allen set screw and locknut in place as a throttle stop, but even there the throttle is held off it a bit likely by the PCM or whatever Toyota calls their logic board. I'll check next time out to see what my idle is @ hot and cold. For a stethoscope I used to use a long screwdriver with the bit on the motor and the handle pressed firmly against my ear. It worked but the $15 unit that Princess Auto sells is excellent for clarity and comfort (and safety).

vibrations as well

Hello,
My problem is kind of similar but it could be from the transmission, I just bought a 2001 Toyota Echo with about 55000 miles on it, and it runs smooth as a baby's but. My only problem with it is when i come to a stop it starts vibrating like crazy almost as if its the hood making all the noise, but when i put it in park or neutral it stops. Any ideas what this might be? I'm pretty nervous since i just bought it, and the noise is driving me crazy?! I guess i can post this in another thread, but any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'd check the exhaust system; the motor lugs down a bit idling in gear and could be shaking at just the right frequency to rattle a loose tail pipe or broken hanger bracket. If so it's an easy fix.

It doesn't sound like an exhaust that's rattling, I think its the hood that's making all the racket, i'm no mechanic but could the hood need tightening some where? I did some surfing and some people say it could be the tranny or motor mounts. Not sure.

if you think your problem is hood related, the adjustments are straightforward, here's what i got on hand:

depending on the noise and where it comes from. i'd say the exhaust is a good bet, there's for example the front ring shaped gasket and the 2 springs that is most likely to be changed of early 2000's echo. it does make a low frequency vibration at first (before it gets worst!).
right now, my tailpipe has snapped from rust at the junction of the front pipe and the bulky part of the tailpipe. obviously the noise comes from the rear end of the car. sound wise, it's like being in one of those flashy car with tailpipe bigger than my fist (low frequency).

an other thing it could be is a loose, rusted or deficient front wheel bearing.
to diagnose: on an open road (free of other users pls) sway left to right to transfer the weight of the car from one side to the other. is the noise altering? or jack a front wheel and make it spin free (with your engine). if it's a corrupt bearing, you'll ear it!
you can always shut the engine to ear better.

hope it helps!
post back and let us know if you fixed your problem (and how).
cheers
