60K maintenance on 2007 Yaris

Hi:

My Yaris is approaching 60k miles. I have a great mechanic that I'm going to take to get the 60k services (about 5 times lower the cost than the Toyota Dealership).

What should I recommend he check and change at 60k? What's a typical 60k maintenance on a Yaris?

I believe the same thing as a 5k change plus checking the air filter and other checks.

I don't think it's even due but have him or her check the tranny fluid.

Here's what the Toyota Maintenance guide says. How much should I expect to pay?

Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Rotate tires
Replace engine air filter
Inspect the following:
Ball joints and dust covers
Brake lines and hoses
Brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs 3
Drive belts 4
Drive shaft boots
Engine coolant 5
Engine valve clearance 6
Exhaust pipes and mountings
Front differential oil
Fuel lines and connections, fuel tank band and fuel tank vapor vent system hoses
Fuel tank cap gasket
Radiator, condenser and/or intercooler
Steering gear box
Steering linkage and boots
Transmission fluid or oil

Additional Maintenance Items for Special Operating Conditions:

Driving on Dirt Roads or Dusty Roads
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis

Applicable Footnotes:
1) Reset the oil replacement reminder light ("MAINT REQD") or the message "OIL MAINTENANCE REQUIRED" on the multi-information display after engine oil replacement.
3) Inspect thickness measurement and disc runout.
4) Initial inspection at 60,000 miles/72 months. Inspect every 15,000 miles/18 months thereafter.
5) See Maintenance Definitions (Engine Coolant) for details.
6) Check for tappet noise and engine vibration and adjust if necessary.

30 bucks for the oil and filter change + your mechanic's fee for a general inspection.

Whatever it costs your mechanic to perform a general inspection.

Only real thing done:
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Rotate tires
Replace engine air filter

Inspect the following:

Ball joints and dust covers = Mechanic will make sure there's grease and that the dust covers aren't broken

Brake lines and hoses = he's going to tug and squeeze

Brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs 3 = It's possible you may need a replacement depending on your driving.

Drive belts 4 = will tug on them

Drive shaft boots = make sure the two drive shafts are okay and still have the rubber boot on properly.
Engine coolant 5 = he'll see if you need more
Engine valve clearance 6 = no sounds when the engine is running, he's done with this check
Exhaust pipes and mountings = tug, pull, tug.
Front differential oil = pulls the dipstick for the tranny, checks, puts back
Fuel lines and connections, fuel tank band and fuel tank vapor vent system hoses = no check engine lights..done.
Fuel tank cap gasket = still a rubber gasket? yes? done.
Radiator, condenser and/or intercooler = If the A/C works...done.
Steering gear box= anything loose? no? done.
Steering linkage and boots = see above
Transmission fluid or oil = depends on your driving.

N/A on the bolts and chassis

I don't mean to over simplify, but not much is needed at 60k. My 2008 is around the same mark. I changed the oil and filter, re-oiled my K&N filter, did minor checks and called it fini. You're right about the dealor costing so much and it was very smart of you to go to an outside mechanic. You did what I tell a lot of people which is to get to know an independent mechanic well.

Ask the mechanic for a normal oil change and ask for a general look over. Be sure to bring up the tranny fluid and brake pads. There's not much else, if you've taken the car to that particular mechanic he or she should know it a bit by now. Print out this list and hand it to him, discuss it with him. Bring a box of donuts, get to know eachother.

It annoys me how dealerships get people to think they're getting so much when in reality....it's an oil change.

Lastly, cost:

So 30 for the oil change and another 50 for the inspection? Call it an even 100? The inspection is really just the labor cost of the mechanic.
