Air Filter

(Bit of a newbie question here)

Is it possible to replace my stock air filter (Echo 2004) with a K & N cone filter? Would I need to modify anything or is it simply a matter of removing the box and replacing it with the cone? Would there be a huge difference in performance if I simply replaced the stock filter with a K & N drop-in one?

I’m not sure if a cone filter will fit onto the stock intake. Most of the time, it will fit with the correct diameter. The problem is that the stock air intake provides cooler air to the engine than a stick-on cone filter. The reason is that the factory design takes in air from behind the fender, bumper, somewhere away from the heat. An open cone filter will give a "deeper" sound, but it kills power and mpg as it pulls in air heated by the engine. A K&N drop-in filter will provide more air flow but many others say that it doesn’t filters as well as a traditional paper filter. IMO, replacing the old filter with a WIX or OEM seem to be the best option.

Another question, if I decide to go with the K & N drop-in or cone filter, or any filter other than the stock one, would I need to get a new MAF sensor?
